Cannibal Corpse – A Skeletal Domain

Cannibal Corpse – A Skeletal Domain

Man, I feel old; this is the 13th album from Cannibal Corpse – JFC!!!  I remember getting Eaten Back to Life in 1990.  Anyway, I’ve gone on record as saying that I was not the biggest fan of Torture, which came out 2 years ago.  While Cannibal Corpse is 100% a death metal band, they have always had a huge thrash influence as well.  As much as I love thrash, I felt Torture, had way too many of those moments, and the blast beats were scaled back to such an extent that they only popped up a few times on Torture.  While tunes, like ‘Scourge of Iron’, erupted in extreme brutal catchy heaviness and one of the finest the band has ever done, I just felt like a lot of the album was kind of just passing me by without staying power.  I had high hopes, since I felt 2009’s Evisceration Plague is the best Corpsegrinder lead album, as well as one of the best the band has ever done.

‘High Velocity Impact Spatter’ blasts out the starting gate, after a creepy weird intro.  This tune will get your heart pumping and your blood boiling.  Very fast track, blast beats, Corpsegrinder sounding ferocious on this and the main guitar riff is trippy and dare I say creepy.  Very memorable and one of the best opening songs they have done.  ‘Kill or Become’ is another brutal affair, with some great guitar melodies!!  Also Alex Webster proving time and time again why he’s one of the best bass players out there.  During the slow groovier parts of this tune, just hear that bass guitar-hot damn.  The 2:25 mark having a nice guitar solo that goes right into an awesome groove.  This is a hellaciously catchy tune!-Fire up that Chainsaw-you’re gonna love the lyrics on this sucker.  Pat and Rob are 2 of the best guitarists in the business and hear those riffs on the beginning of the title track!  Monstrous.  And Paul blasting away, mixing the drums up a lot with blasts, grooves and the tempo shifts on this track are killer.  You will feel like you are at the kingdom of the dead, while you listen to this track and hear George belts out his vocals singing that part and other memorable parts.  You can clearly hear all his lyrics and he sings really fast on this song.  Man, as a singer myself, not sure I could ever sing that fast and still make it sound like I was growling English.

Also at his age, the fact that George can still belt out those frickin screams is mind boggling.  Check out ‘Headlong into Carnage’ if you need any proof as to why he is still one of the best dm vocalists out there today.  The tunes mix in more groove parts and thrash, but to a much better extent on this album.  ‘Icepick Lobotomy’ is a great song title that has a killer slow down and some raging isolated guitar parts coming out of just one side of the speaker before the 2 min mark.  Again the use of haunting guitar melodies are ever present on A Skeletal Domain, making this one of their more darker sounding records they have ever done and I love it!  However some of the songs towards the end of the album kinda lose a bit of steam, kinda going more for the midpaced groove that Cannibal Corpse have incorporated more and more into their toolbox over the last several records.  I would have liked some faster blasting sections, but hey I don’t write for Cannibal Corpse.  They return in brutal fashion with album closer and one of the strongest on the record-‘Hollowed Bodies’.  Amazing foreboding guitar melodies in the beginning, sending the tune into brutal blast beat territory as well as some other tempo shifts.

Everyone is at the top of their game here and Cannibal Corpse opting not to return to Mana Studios, still get the signature Cannibal Corpse sound and it sounds incredible.  The band also going for an old school drawing for the cover, which is fun to look at as, the skeletons get ready to cause some trouble.  A Skeletal Domain is a much better album than Torture.  This new release sees Cannibal Corpse bringing forth more blast beats, but also incorporating some truly dark guitar melodies, making this a sinister sounding and evil album in parts.  The songs are catchy, memorable and other than some tunes that kind of just flew by me without hanging out and downing some red bull and vodka shots, by and large A Skeletal Domain kicks ass and shows the world why they are still one of the best in death metal.  Buy or get your head lopped off by a chainsaw!!
