horrendous – Anareta

Written by Frank Rini

Dark Descent Records has a madman at the helm, running that tight ship-Matt Calvert.  This bastard, knows his death metal and continues to punish all other labels year after ‘effin year.  When he signed Horrendous a few years ago I knew he found another diamond in the underground, when The Chills debut album devastated the underground.  A mere year after releasing their second and fantastic album, Ecdysis, Horrendous are back with Anareta.  From start to finish this album smokes much of the competition out there-not even close.  Hell, check out the album cover, probably my favorite for the year.  What could be more thrilling than hanging out with your friends on a Saturday afternoon, having a couple of brewskies, while walking around waiting to walk through some horrid, gut strewn, rib splitting gory horned demon cavern?  I cannot think of anything better than this, well I can, one that is safer, for sure, I’m just trying to be stupid now.

Horrendous, for me, are the elite in death metal.  Truly delivering creative, brutality that not only harkens back to the day of yore, but pushes death metal into new areas.  One minute they are punishing you on “Acolytes”, then the next they are getting all acoustictry on “Sum of All Failures”.  But this track then erupts into some fast paced death thrashing, before getting into a true old school 90’s groove that marches all over your rotten, stink filled, blasphemous soul.  One of the finest tracks the band has ever written.

Anareta features a great old school production, killer layout, album cover of the year award, and more guitar solos this time around.  Horrendous also throws in a few well placed blast beats just to thrash your corpse against the wall, time and time and time and time again.  Man, I am giving out all sorts of high marks recently.  Well who gives a shit? Do you really want me reviewing crap and wasting your time??  No you do not, you’re probably on the toilet taking a crap now, while you’re reading this review anyway.  Regardless, Horrendous are one of the best death metal bands out there, at the moment and Anareta is a scorcher.

Buy or eat Hot Pockets for the rest of your life and Die!!
