Screaming Trees – Dust – Reissue

Written by John Deaux

Originally released back in 1996, Dust is considered to be the most important Screaming Trees album due to it being a completely different direction from its psychedelic & punk predecessors. This album still retains the hard edge of prior albums, yet Dust has a more folk/blues vibe to it & at the time is was the perfect way to end.

This brand new version of the album now contains a 2nd disc featuring Darkness Darkness from the True Lies movie soundtrack but b-sides from the singles All I Know, Ocean of Confusion, Butterfly & Sworn & Broken. There’s even a their version of the John Lennon Classic, Working Class Hero, a cracking tribute to the man.

Dust not only sounds great but it hasn’t aged a bit, in fact it’s got better. It’s hard to believe that this album is 21 years old. It stands up against the music Soundgarden, Alice in Chains & Pearl Jam have put out in recent years.

Dust has been given a whole new lease of life with this 2 CD set.  The booklet that comes with this release is great. Featuring not only  a plethora of rare memorabilia photos but also liner notes from Matt Reynolds of Savage Gringo who was the Screaming Trees press agent around the time of Dust. These liner notes from an inside source, provides a much-needed insight, not just to this record but to the band & what was happening around them as well.

Dust is an album that is awaiting rediscovery. Not only from those who remember the band, but from those who have yet to find that there was more to this genre of music than just Nirvana

This was the album that was meant to catapult the Screaming Trees to the next level & to playing bigger venues. Sadly it wasn’t to be. But what an album to go out on.

For fans of Grunge
