AATR CATCH UP WITH ATHEENA SWEDISH ELECTRONIC METALCORE BAND – INTERVIEW
24th November 2024 0 By QuinccyATHEENA emerged in 2014 as a bold force in the music scene, seamlessly blending the intensity of metal with the infectious melodies of pop. With heavy riffs, dual-vocal dynamics, and electronic undertones, the band’s genre-defying sound captivates fans across musical boundaries. Their live performances are electrifying, earning them recognition across Europe and a loyal fanbase.
Recently All About The Rock caught up with Atheena whilst they prepped for their first show in seven years!
Firstly, What inspired you to start making music together?
I think we all shared a vision of combining the heavy parts of metal together with catchy choruses. Also that we have fun together as a group!
How did you meet each other?
Through the music actually, we played in 2 separate bands and played a gig together. After that we stayed in touch and later decided to start ATHEENA.
What are your musical influences?
A lot of modern metalcore bands like Architects, Bring me the horizon etc but also pop and rock artists as Zara Larsson, Avril Lavigne and Simple plan.
How would you describe your music style?
Without putting ourselves too much in a label I would say it’s a mixture between metal and electronic pop/rock music.
What is your favorite song to perform live and why?
Alex: ”Outgrow”, I love how the beautiful melodies compliment the story in the lyrics together with the different elements of the song.
Adde: My favorite song to perform live is ”My Mind”. It really defines our band’s sound, with a great mix of powerful screaming sections and a catchy chorus that often results in a great crowd response!
Tim: ”Outgrow”! For me as a drummer, I can express multiple techniques such as the marching part in the verses and both double bass and blast beats during the breakdown. The chorus also brings out a lot of energy in my playing.
What is the most unusual place you’ve performed?
I think it must be the time we played in a barn out in the countryside. Good gig but just a bit strange scenery for us.
What is your favorite lyrics you’ve written?
Alex: For me it’s definitely ”Outgrow”.
Adde: I have to say our new song ”Burn”
If you could choose any song to cover, what song would you choose?
I’m not a huge fan of doing covers but perhaps a Disney song like ”go the distance” or ”two worlds”.
What is the next big project you’re working on?
Right now we are recording new songs that we plan to release one by one actually. Perhaps we’ll release an EP but that depends on the interest for it. We also want to get out there and play loads of shows.
What is your vision for the future of your band?
We want to reach out so more people can enjoy our music, play loads of shows. Have fun while doing all of this.
What is your dream venue to perform at?
Probably one of the big arenas here in Sweden, Avicii arena perhaps?
What is your favorite way to celebrate a successful show?
Meet the crowd in the merch and just enjoy the moment with the fans!
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a band so far?
I think the big challenge for us and as for many others is to stay relevant. The music industry is very unforgiving and if you are like us that now does a comeback after 4 years of radio silence it’s hard to find the way back.
What is the most important message you want to convey through your music?
Don’t be afraid to express your emotions.
How do you see your music evolving in the next five years?
Hopefully keeping the same essence of the band’s sound but keep getting inspired by so many good musicians, songwriters and producers.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you on stage?
When we were playing a gig in Germany I (Alex) got so much adrenaline in my body so I forgot that we weren’t in Sweden. So I spoke Swedish to the crowd and everyone went silent, haha. Worst part is that I didn’t even notice that this occurred and I had to hear it from the others after the gig.
