AATR catch up with Call Me Amour.

26th March 2025 0 By Laura Jane

All About The Rock manage to catch in with Call Me Amour after their recent UK tour supporting Set It Off! Call Me Amour are a enigmatic alternative rock four-piece band. Mixing dark electronica with sonic guitars, CALL ME AMOUR craft their music to evoke emotion. Inspire and be inspired – Whether that be through a feeling, losing yourself at a live show, finding a memory, or a change. We spoke today with Geoff Murphy (Guitarist) to find out a few questions about Call Me Amour and what it’s like on the road. Let’s get into it…

Firstly, thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer a few questions with us at All About The Rock.

Let’s start off with a nice easy question – what inspired the name of your band?

Geoff: So it’s a combination of Harry’s favourite song “Call Me Al” by Paul Simon and the word love….which sound more romantic in French

Oui Oui (I’d speak some more french but alas, I don’t know french…) Which artists have influenced your music the most?

Geoff: We’re all inspired by different bands individually from Otis Redding to Bad Omens, Nirvana to Post Malone, Justin Bieber to BMTH….we’re fans of music in general not a particular genre. Clearly we steer towards rock…so I’d say BMTH, Dinosaur Pile-up, Bad Omens to name a few.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest EP self-titled ‘Call Me Amor‘?

Geoff: Again we were inspired by multiple bands and genres so we wanted a broad range on this EP and I think we managed that and still retain Call Me Amours sound.

That’s perfect after listening to your recent release I found it to be an amazing listen. How would you say your sound has evolved since your first release?

Geoff: We’ve evolved organically I think, we didn’t make a conscious decision to change things it was just where we were at when we wrote them. I suppose we switched the writing process around. The first EP was written using EDM, samples etc and then layered with guitars, drums etc in the studio but for the self titled release we concentrated on writing songs on guitars etc and layering the EDM content after. I think it worked

What challenges, if any did you face while producing the recently released self-titled EP?

Geoff: The usual challenges I think every band goes through, there are sections that sound great as a demo but when it comes to being in the studio those ideas don’t always work so we sometimes hit a wall and have to bump heads together to get to a point where we’re happy.

How do you approach songwriting, and who typically takes the lead in the process?

Geoff: From the start I think we know what kind of songs we want and I’ll take this to the home studio and start bashing out chord progressions etc and trying different layers until I have a solid demo of verse chorus etc, Harry will come in and work on top lines, vocals and any fine tuning and we’ll generally work together until we’re happy with the idea before structuring it. Danny will come in and throw his drumming skills on it and I guess eventually the three of us with a producer will turn the idea jnto reality.

What has been the most challenging song for you to write and why?

Geoff: They’re all a challenge to be honest. To make an idea in your head and transfer it to your fingertips, then to a finished item is no easy task for the most part but occasionally songs will flow easily but I find the most satisfaction in working though the hard parts to produce an amazing song. One example was “Bloom”, in the mid section we tried a few different ideas until we all agreed a big aggressive vocal section would be the icing on the cake….and Scott Kennedy absolutely nailed it!!

What has been the most memorable moment of your career so far?

Geoff: We were recently given the accolade of Amazon UK’s breakthrough artist and had our EP/band up on the Leicester Square billboard. Very proud of that!

What can fans expect from your live performances on this tour?

Geoff: We love playing live and love the crowds that are there for a show so we’ll always put on a lively show and for two reasons…we absolutely love doing it and we want the crowd to be part of that experience! Seeing the audience having a good time and singing back to you is about as rewarding as it gets!

How do you decide on the setlist for each show?

Geoff: It’s like a story really, we have to have an immediate impact, a great storyline and a big ending! But we can also make fine adjustments when needed, depending on what crowd we’re playing to, who we’re on tour with etc…but for the most time we just play songs we know people are gonna move to.

A topic that’s rarely spoke about that I’d like to touch on is how you guys fare whilst on tour – how do you handle the pressures of touring and performing live?

Geoff: Touring is hard going, a real rollercoaster of emotions but it becomes second nature pretty quickly and each show is as exciting as the one before…as I said we just love playing the songs to the audiences and having one big party with them for those few moments we’re onstage! We also support each other and make sure everyone is in a good state of mind, that’s key to a band surviving a long tour for me.

And what about the emotional and mental challenges of being on tour, how do you handle these?

Geoff: We have a good solid crew of friends around us on tour and everyone is there for each other. When it comes to friends/family back home we are in constant contact with our loved ones and they also give us that support when needed. It’s all about surrounding yourself with good, likeminded people that have the same goals as you.

With current tour having come to an end now – how does this tour compare to previous ones you’ve done?

Geoff: This is the biggest tour we’ve done so far so it’s going to both tough but super enjoyable to be out there for such a long stint. I’m hanging out with my friends and playing some amazing venues in some beautiful countries….whats not to like!

Have there been any funny or unexpected moments on stage?

Geoff: We’ve had a few moments on stage, some funny and some bad ones. I fell over once when I tried to kick a rolled up t-shirt into the crowd and I couldn’t get back up because I was playing guitar so I had to finish the song on my back like a stranded turtle…in the midst of that Harry came hurtling back to the stage and fell over the monitor….two stranded turtles trying to be rock stars.

Not going to lie there, that’s such a good visual image to have. Can you share any more funny or interesting stories from the road?

Geoff: I’ve never shared this before but I think I can now… So there’s a well known ritual amongst bands known as a “PGP” or “Pre Gig Poo”…on one particular occasion I had that ritual, I went to the toilet and uncouple my IEM’s (earphones) from my receiver pack which is on my belt and dropped my trousers. I finished my business and “wiped” but managed to push the jack lead connector of my earphone into my ass…..disgusting right? It gets worse, I had an issue with my earphones shortly after and our FOH engineer uncouple my earphones from my pack to take a look and whilst opening the pack up he put the earphone jack in his mouth……I didn’t know how to tell him!  (I hope that’s not too gross).

Nothing is to gross for sharing here! Do you have any favourite tracks to perform live?

Geoff: I like the energy of “Good Day” and especially when Mikey Chapman is able to come out and perform with us! It lifts the whole performance.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

Geoff: I say the same thing every time…always go for your dreams and be willing to work hard at it but one of the main things to adopt is ALWAYS  surround yourself with people that care and think the same way you do….if you’re all on the same page and work hard you achieve your dreams.

How do you stay motivated and inspired to create new music?

Geoff: I love the creative side of writing music and from a seed to a flower it has to be the most satisfying thing when you get on stage and play that finished product for your audiences.

What are your plans for the future, both musically and personally?

Geoff: We have plans already in place for recording a new EP, we also have our first EU/UK headline tour coming up at the end of the year…and another little outing which we can announce very soon hopefully. We’re always busy or working towards something so keep your ears and eyes open for regular announcements. Personally after this tour I just want a couch, my family and a cup of tea.

We all love a good bit of downtime with a cuppa – can’t dispute that! And a final question – just to throw a curve ball your way. Have you ever been tempted to sleep inside the fridge?

Geoff: Yes I have…I got sunburnt on a holiday once and the burn and sweating was so bad I had to have regular cold showers, which didn’t seem to cut it. Eventually I found Aloe Vera gel…the so called saviour of sunburn, I covered myself in the stuff and quickly realised something was wrong, I was allergic to the stuff so not only was I burning up, my skin from head to toe was itchy for about an hour. I would gladly have thrown all the beers out the fridge and curled up naked in it.
