CALIBAN – BACK FROM HELL – Album Review

CALIBAN – BACK FROM HELL – Album Review

19th April 2025 0 By Damian Rounding

Formed in 1997, originally known as Never Again, Caliban have always been known for their dynamic blend of aggressive vocals, melodic passages, and heavy breakdowns. I first became interested after hearing their “Shadow Hearts” album but really became a fan after hearing “The Opposite From Within”. With their latest release “Back From Hell”, the band delivers a powerful statement of resurgence that firmly places them back amongst metalcore’s elites.

The album opens with “Resurgence,” a well-crafted orchestral intro that sets the scene for the rest of the record. It transitions smoothly into “Guilt Trip,” featuring Mental Cruelty, perfectly establishing the tone and intensity of the entire record.

Notable guest appearances, such as Fit For An Autopsy on “Dear Suffering” significantly elevate the tracks’ brutality. Throughout the album, be prepared to be treated to early 2000s-inspired guitar chugs, dissonant riffs, and crushing breakdowns. While stylistically different from their early work, “Back From Hell” demonstrates how Caliban continues to mature both musically and creatively.

The guitars are heavier than ever, and Schmidt’s cleans have a subtle grit to them, complementing the overall sound even better than before. Andreas Dörner’s signature layered heavy vocals remain a standout feature, solidifying the band’s distinctive style.

Caliban continues their tradition of songs in both English and German, evident in their track “Alte Seele”. Even with my rusty German (my last German lesson was in 2004!), I’m eager to experience all their songs in their upcoming UK tour dates.

“Back From Hell” revisits the raw intensity of Caliban’s early days but through a refined, mature lens. It’s safe to say I remain a huge fan and have already pre-ordered the vinyl. Fingers crossed it arrives soon.
