CANE HILL AND THE GLOOM IN THE CORNER – 22ND NOVEMBER 2024: REBELLION MANCHESTER

23rd November 2024 0 By Laura Jane

It was a cold night in Manchester, in fact so cold and icy I could have almost slid to the venue quicker than public transport but I tell you something it was sweaty inside Rebellion. I’m not going to mention about the smell as I usually do as for once it actually wasn’t too bad. It seemed that people wore their deodorant today – Jokes aside today’s adventure was to Cane Hill and The Gloom In The Corner gig at Rebellion in Manchester. I’ll be honest I’ve been highly anticipating this show for a while and since my injury to my foot what an explosive way to start back attending gigs (Yeah, I know it’s been 2 weeks but that seems like an eternity!).

Let’s get down to it, who is Cane Hill and who are The Gloom In The Corner?

Cane Hill is a metalcore band who were formed in New Orleans Louisiana, in 2011 and has been going strength to strength from that moment forward. Today’s show was Cane Hill’s first ever headlining show in the UK which makes this even more exciting. Having just finished their most recent tour with Sign Of The Swarms only around two months back they are straight back at it again across the pond here in the UK (I did actually get to check out Sign Of The Swarms last month on the Faces Of Death Tour in Manchester, if you would like to read how that went click >> HERE << ).

The supporting band The Gloom In The Corner, is a metalcore band from the other side of the world hailing from Melbourne, Australia, and was formed in 2016. I hadn’t heard much from these guys until around 20 minutes before the show and I’ll be honest after hearing them on Spotify on the journey to Manchester, it excited me to find out they were actually the band to be supporting tonight. I loved their sound since my brief listen before the show. I honestly can’t believe that I’ve not listened to them or even heard about them earlier.

The times for the evening were 19:50 for The Gloom In The Corner and 20:50 for Cane Hill which means in terms of gigs it was a pretty short affair and was done and over by 21:45 which was a shame, to be honest. I wish maybe there had been another band included on the tour for the date but understandably you get what you’re given and it wasn’t a bad thing as when you’re over 30 sometimes multiple support bands can make you feel like you need to leave early to get snuggled into bed with a hot chocolate and your cats, or maybe that’s just me?

The Gloom In The Corner warmed the crowds up nicely… for 5 minutes until they had a technology malfunction and required to take a few minutes to fix the “laptop that needed rebooting”. The band showed great energy during the mishap and interacted perfectly with the heckles from the crowds. I have to commend how professionally yet comically they handled the situation was a highlight of the evening in fact. After the issue was resolved it was clean sailing to the end of their set. Throughout the set, they played some of their more well-known and listened to tracks (Sorry guys, I’m just going off your Spotify numbers to set list) such as “Ronin“, “The Jericho Protocol” and “Misanthropic“.

I loved their set, their humor, and the general energy they brought to the stage, I would happily go and see The Gloom In The Corner again if they were ever to tour again in the UK be that headlining or support (** hint, when is it happening again lads?**) you can relate to artists having issues on stage and just saying “hey fuck it, technology is shit”. I hear you… I hear you.

After The Gloom In The Corner’s energetic set, it was time for Cane Hill. Cane Hill has been a favorite band of mine for some time when I accidentally stumbled across them one day through a Spotify shuffle (I should be sponsored by Spotify to be honest with how much I mention the goddamn thing, I swear.. I am not sponsored). They were absolutely fucking amazing. Excuse the French (Pardon the French?) but they were so good. I’m not one to fan girl (Apart from my many articles where I’m praising bands such as Municipal Waste *ahem*) but honestly, if you have time to catch them on their tour whilst in the UK, please do. You’ll have a fabulous time. I don’t mind Rebellion as a venue but honestly, I really hoped that these guys would have sold out their show for Manchester and wish it had come to the point where an upgrade in venue would have been required because they really deserve it. The venue was packed don’t get me wrong but it did not sell out (shockingly), I would have loved to see these guys playing Ritz or Academy.

Cane Hill had an explosive opener starting their set off with “The Midnight Sun” What an absolute cracking opener with the tour being in support of their third album “A Piece Of Me I’ll Never Let You Find” which was released on the 1st November through Out Of Line Music. You can find the video below to their recent single release from the album “Permanence in Sleep”. Other notable tracks played through the evening were “Finding Euphoria”, “Lord Of Flies” and “Too Far Gone”. Absolutely *Chefs kiss* was definitely worth the month or so of anticipation waiting for this gig.Overall, amazing night – two awesome bands who complimented each other perfectly. Although there was some part-time ninja acrobatics as at any show I do have to give compliments to people for looking out for each other, it was nice to see and also to nearly have my camera booted for someone to stand to the side of me to stop that from happening. It honestly showed the true gig spirit was live at this gig, not just a thing that happens at Christmas (in my head that sounded a lot better than it read, there’s some humor in there I promise).
