DISCOVER | FLAWLESS VICTORY- East Midlands, UK.
24th January 2023 0 By QuinccyToday on DISCOVER, I’m joined with Mike from Flawless Victory. Flawless Victory are a three piece groove metal band from the East Midlands, United Kingdom. Members of Flawless victory are Mike Regis (guitar/vocals), Greg Wilson (drums/vocals) and Dan Turner (bass). Today we talk about past and current members, grocery shopping and notable bands from the past.
Firstly, thank you for joining me this evening. Flawless Victory, where did it all start and how did you guys meet?
Mike: Myself and the drummer met in the most rock and roll environment, the pub. After working out that we had passion for the same sort of music metal we decided to start a project up. We started by both writing riffs and bouncing ideas of each other at my house and we found out that we could write well and easy together. This helped us create the songs we still use today after that it was a long journey to find a bassist which has given us some good musicians over the years. We have had more than a handful of different musicians across the years.
Sounds like it’s been an adventure, could you tell me who you acquired to the band during the journey who makes up the band now and a bit about each member and their role in the band?
Mike: Wow, that is a long list. Currently we are Greg Wilson on drums and vocals, one of the finest unsigned drummers I have ever had the pleasure to play with. With his unusual style and endless energy it always puts a smile on my face to have him drumming in our band. Then there’s me, mike Regis on guitar and singing I’m just a old school metal guitarist who enjoys playing groovy riffs and having fun playing the music I enjoy. Our current bassist Dan Turner who has just joined has been a just what we needed to spark the passion and fire in us again after a long time away from gigging then coming back to this and recording a ep and album it’s been a lot of work but Dan gives any room he is in the energy he just has in buckets.
As for the previous members I will leave it to the main ones who lasted more than a couple of practices. Our most famous bassist Sam Harding an amazing human and great bass player now plays all over the world with Arlo parks. Bruno Dimaire was our lead guitarist for around a year another really good musician and a close friend to this day would love to have him back but he doesn’t really play in a serious manner anymore.
It’s great to see a band still remaining strong after multiple member switches though, and it’s great that some members have left a positive impression! How would you describe your music to someone who had never heard your band before?
Mike: We really are hard to pin point into one genre. We are quite ecliptic in our approach and style we always have an underline groove in our music. So we like to be called groove Metal but there is so much more to it then that. One song sounds drastically different to the next it’s like a sonic assault on the senses. Each gig is different with us so every time you see this groove Metal machine it’s a different experience
Sounds like a lot of variety there, could you name your top 5 notable bands that have influenced your style so far?
Mike: So the music that has been created so far is from me and Greg so I will go into them influences. Dream theater, Devildriver, Sepultura, System of a down and Pantera. Quite a blend I know but definitely element of each in this band from the tribal drum style of Sepultura to the groove and swagger of Pantera.
Funny fact, Sepultura was one of the first bands to get me into metal and similar genres. I got a boot leg CD given from my cousin back in the day and got told ‘giz this a bash you’ll like it’. What is your usual creative process when creating music, is it usually one person takes the lead or do you all get involved when it comes to the direction?
Mike: You can’t go wrong with Sepultura what a epic band to get you in to metal. Now that’s how it’s done right! The usual process as it has been for such a long time has been a shared idea that grows and develops into a metal song we try not to have a constant on the music if it sounds good and has a memorable aspect to it we keep it. Not all riffs are magic or winners but it all starts with that initial idea which is either the brain child or one or both. We keep a chat with all the possible ideas so if we need a riff we have a library of ideas to pull from when we need it. With Dan joining we will see what chaos he will add to the mix of creating music.
Sounds exciting for the possible direction to come! If people wanted to come and experience Flawless Victory in person, where would they be able to catch you in 2024?
Mike: Dates are currently TBC – As mentioned we came back to this after a hiatus we have come back to re record old new tracks to get back to gigging strength. Now that we have dan we don’t want to rush this and want to give him time to fit in and know the songs so when we do perform it’s a tight enjoyable performance for both band and audiences. One thing we will definitely be participating in is the battle of bloodstock for the chance to play the legendary festival. Expect to see Flawless Victory at many places next year, once we start no one will be able to stop us. Last time we were actively gigging we nearly got signed so that’s the dream ultimately.
Aww that’s amazing news! Hopefully 2024 will be the year! So we’re nearly at the end of the interview now. Have you ever been given any good gems of wisdom since deciding to be involved in music?
Mike: I guess the best advise I was given was to make music for you don’t try and be something your not. Have fun and enjoy making music. Stay grounded and true to yourself.
That’s some solid advice, I always feel that people lose the true meaning of what it means to play music! It’s been lovely having you spend some time to speak to me tonight, I like to end my interviews on a high note. So I have one last, “fun” question for you. What are three items you might purchase at the grocery store?
Mike: Thank you for taking the time out of your day to conduct this interview.
3 things from a grocery store…… Hmmm. I’d say some vocalzones so to protect my voice for the harsh style of music we do. Some jack Daniels for a pre gig warm up and spare pants because you never know how messy the night will become after the gig!
