Dom Martin Band – La Belle Angele – 2nd November 2024

4th November 2024 0 By Jon Deaux

Having been a fan of Doms’ acoustic work for a few years, I was excited to hear him with a full band. And I wasn’t disappointed.

Dom Martin and his band ripped the venue’s roof off. The man’s guitar tone was eargasmic. Exactly what you want for a modern blues guitar. It was warm and cuddly just like the fleecie blanket I’m going to have to snuggle under to stay warm this winter thanks to the current British government.

It’s easy and lazy to bring comparisons to the likes of Rory Gallagher, Van Morison and Foy Vance because they just so happen to also be Irish musicians, but you could also add in bits of Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy for good measure, but I wont.  Dom Martin is in a league of his own and it’s no wonder he was taken out on Joe Bonamassa’s KTBA Mediterranean Cruise III 2023.

Unlike a few current blues players, he’s not about a million notes a minute and it’s not what he plays, it’s about what he doesn’t play.

His rendition of Blues On The Bay with its extended jam was sublime. The interplay between bass, drums, and his guitar was frisson-inducing. Magic was made and you could see the surprise on the trio’s face. Their version of the classic Crazy was another jaw-dropping moment. It’s a sexy song at the best of times, but Doms’ version just poured over you with the touch of a slut, and I do enjoy the touch of a slut.

The tracks Belfast Blues, Hell For You, and Government were just other wordly. The audience was incredibly receptive to the performance and gave just as much back to him and the band as he gave to us.

Everyone left that venue in hight spirits after witnessing one of the best Blues gigs that La Belle has hosted to date.

I’m looking forward to getting a copy of the live album.(Available HERE)
