Gilby Clarke – Bannermans – Edinburgh – 4th November 2024
5th November 2024Gilby Clarke came to Scotland to celebrate his album Pawn Shop Guitars turning 30. The setlist is a bit of a mixed bag and not what I was expecting. I should be used to expecting the unexpected by now, but it’s always a surprise when you don’t get the expected. Material from Slash’s Snakepit, Gilbys solo albums, a couple of GnR tracks, a Rolling Stones cover and to finish things off a cover of The Who classic I Won’t Get Fooled Again.
Of course, the GnR classics Patience and It’s So Easy had the Bannersmans’ audience singing with great aplomb but the biggest sing-along was the Bob Dylan classic Knockin’ On Heavens Door which Gilby dedicated to Wayne Kramer of the MC5 as well as a few other friends he had lost this year. Not a dry eye in the house.
Tijuana Jail and Cure Me or Kill Me from Pawnshop Guitars were given an outing along with a couple of tracks from his latest offering The Gospel Truth (The Gospel Truth, Rock n Roll Is Getting Louder) but the biggest surprise of the night went to a performance of the track Motorcycle Cowboys as it’s not a song that is often played live by Mr. Clarke but it’s a severely overlooked track in general, and I bloody love it.
Gilby’s band for the night featured EJ Curse on bass ( Doro, Silent Rage, Candy) & Troy Patrick Farrell (Enuff Znuff, Tantric, Lost Angels ) on Drums and they were tighter than a gnats arse.
It was a superb set of just the right amount of LA Sleaze and a lovely evening of Rock n Roll bliss.
