Helloween – March Of Time (The Best Of 40 Years) – CD Review
11th March 2025Heavy metal is a lot like ancient Greek mythology—full of gods, monsters, and people shouting dramatically while wearing impractical outfits. And in the case of Helloween, you get all three in one band. They’ve been around for 40 years, which is about the same length of time it takes to listen to a prog metal concept album.
This March of Time compilation is essentially a musical time machine, except instead of taking you back to important historical events, it just drops you into various points in Helloween’s career. You’ll hear how their sound has evolved from early, high-pitched yelps about wizards and pumpkins to slightly later, high-pitched yelps about more sophisticated things, like time itself.
The 3CD version means you get even more Helloween, which is great if you like Helloween, and quite overwhelming if you don’t. It’s a little bit like ordering an all-you-can-eat buffet, then realizing it’s exclusively made up of extremely fast guitars and people screaming about destiny.
Standout tracks include I Want Out, which remains an anthem for people who have ever been trapped in an awkward conversation
Eagle Fly Free, a song that teaches us that eagles, despite being known for flying, somehow need encouragement to do so. And of course, there’s March of Time itself, which is about the relentless passage of time—something we’re all forced to experience, whether we like it or not, much like this 3CD collection if you put it on at full volume. This is an excellent compilation for both Helloween fans and people who have never heard of them but want to experience four decades of German power metal in one sitting. Just don’t expect it to include an actual march, because that would require slowing down, and Helloween simply do not believe in that.Score 9/10
