IPECAC ANNOUNCE GEEK SHOW EUROPEAN VACATION STARRING MR. BUNGLE, OXBOW AND SPOTLIGHTS

11th December 2023 0 By Jon Deaux

Mr. Bungle, Oxbow, and Spotlights join forces in June 2024 for Ipecac Recordings’ Geek Show European Vacation, with the label-mates performing several shows across Europe – honoring the label’s 25th anniversary.

The success of the US version of the Ipecac Geek Show prompted the label to bring the tour overseas, in what will be the first Mr. Bungle performances in Europe since 2000.

All three bands are also playing Hellfest. Mr. Bungle alone will also be playing Copenhell in Denmark on the 20th of June and Tons of Rock in Oslo on the 27th of June.

Revisit the recent albums Love’s Holiday by Oxbow and Alchemy For The Dead by Spotlights which have landed in various end-of-year lists.

Mr. Bungle released The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo in 2020, an album that saw the Eureka, Calif.-born band record songs from their 1986 cassette-only demo. The newly revamped version of the seminal band sees Trevor Dunn, Mike Patton, and Trey Spruance joined by Scott Ian (Anthrax, S.O.D.) and Dave Lombardo (Dead Cross, ex-Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies). Rolling Stone dubbed the album “a feast of ingenious riffs… and pure manic energy,” Stereogum said “Mr. Bungle are reliving their very earliest days and kicking a whole lot of ass in the process,” and Decibel declared it “one of the best thrash records of the year.”

Spotlights, the beloved trio of Mario and Sarah Quintero with drummer Chris Enriquez, decamped to Pittsburgh over the pandemic and released Alchemy For The Dead earlier this year. The album was a balancing act, a push-and-pull of jarring metallic catharsis and sweeping distortion. Even as either side vies for supremacy, neither extreme ever completely tightens its grip, allowing waves of melodic vocals and expressive sonic sorcery to breathe in the middle.

OXBOW has spent three decades fusing traditional music forms with the less refined and often transgressive approaches of late 20th-century subterranean movements. The balance of these opposing forces has been continually recalibrated over the years, but the band has never leaned so heavily into the harmonious side of their sound as they have on Love’s Holiday.
