KillerKorp – Vices EP Review
3rd January 2025 0 By Laura JaneHailing from Suffolk, UK, KillerKorp has been making waves in the underground scene since their debut EP ‘Pain’ released on 18th April 2019. Since their original formation in 2018, KillerKorp has toured with some well-known names and up-and-coming bands such as Raised by Owls, Celestial Sanctuary, and Beyond Extinction. I’ll be honest, I’ve not heard of these guys before but I’m always interested in finding new music to listen to, review, and hopefully walk away from with some sort of euphoric feeling that doesn’t leave me feeling like I’ve just had to unfortunately listen to the full Swollen Teeth EP again. Spoiler alert; I didn’t like it. I was not enjoyable. Today the review is focusing on their recent EP release “Vices” released 13th December 2024.
Kicking off their EP ‘Vices‘ with the title track “Vices” it brings a bit of eerie mystery before kicking off at 31 seconds in. The track is composed of brutal gutturals, hard thwacking blast beats and. Through the track I did get a slight moment of nostalgia from feeling that around 1 minute was somewhat resemblance in sound to “Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste” by Norma Jean which to me was a real pleasant surprise. The intensity continues to manifest through the following tracks of ‘Last Gasp’and ‘Cathed’. The final track ‘Weak‘ is by no means weak and a solid end to a good 17 minutes 18 seconds listen. It does set the tempo-down and breaks off the EP to an eerie end which I guess you could say the beginning of “Vice” foreshadows so it’s a fitting end to the EP. I would honestly say this track is possibly my highlighted track of the EP. I’m not usually a fan of really long songs but this one kept me engaged and kept me wanting to listen on whilst going for 6 minutes and 7 seconds total, so well done guys – if you’ve managed to keep someone with ADHD engaged for that long there’s clearly some substance to the sound.
I do feel sometimes the production quality of this album may have let it down in some ways with there being a few times where it felt a bit rough, I’m not sure if this was the vibe intended if so I guess my feedback is invalid on this occasion, however, if this is not intentional I do believe if this was corrected it would have been a much better audible experience. By no means is it the same quality as the Nokia 3210 recordings I often joke about so I’d like to set that straight, it’s not bad but it’s not amazing. Skip forward 2 minutes here… I decided you know what I’ll switch it over to a different streaming service and I’ll be honest when I did this the quality did seem to be better. Maybe this is something that needs to be looked into by the guys just as a little note.
Jakey Day (lead guitarist) remarks: “This EP is our proudest body of work. We feel that we’ve captured the true meaning of what is to be Killerkorp; we have finally found a sound that we can call home. You can expect pure emotion mixed with raw aggression”.
Overall, I feel it’s a strong EP it brings speed, it brings intensity, it brings energy just the only negative to be noted would be the possibility of the recording being slightly a letdown in places but as reasons above this could possibly be to hosting so it’s hard to mark this as a loss to overall score. However, it still scores a strong 8/10 for overall execution, sound and just being. As self-quoted by the band above it does exactly as they’ve wanted to achieve and wanted people to expect pure emotion mixed with raw aggression. It completely hits the nail on the head there. I’d highly suggest anyone who is a fan of grindcore, death metal, deathcore and slam to check out this EP as I feel it would tick a lot of boxes for the different genres as it seamlessly blends elements from them together.
Score 8/10
