Legacy of Payne – Spawn of Creation – Album Review
17th April 2025I recently found myself in rather unusual company—Legacy of Payne, a thrash metal outfit from Portugal, and their latest effort, Spawn of Creation. I gave it a spin last night after settling the badger—only for a rest, mind, nothing permanent. Fierce little creature, oddly in tune with the mood of the album.
The guitars are… something else. Not flashy for the sake of it, but deliberate—razor-sharp and controlled. The riffs twist and coil like you’re trying to retrieve something lodged deep in a hamster’s cheek.
The rhythm section provides a thunderous backdrop that causes all the medication bottles on my shelf to vibrate themselves onto the floor.
The vocals aren’t melodic, per se. More guttural. Primaeval. Reminiscent of the echo through a ventilation shaft in a condemned abattoir. But there’s conviction there. Like André Bento means whatever it is he’s growling about.
The standout track “Open Neck” builds with the slow, creeping dread I typically associate with realising I’ve mixed up medication dosages.
The whole album has this atmosphere… not quite evil, no, but troubled. You can hear the frustration, the bile, and the need to shout into the void until something shouts back. And honestly, that’s rather cathartic.
I wouldn’t recommend it for calming livestock or background music in the surgery. But if you’re in the mood for something raw, uncompromising, and just a bit unsettling, Spawn of Creation does the job. Thoroughly.
I’ve left it playing for the ferrets to see if it keeps them out of the kitchen.
