9th June 2025 0 By Jess Mather

Tiago Masseti, the creative force behind MASSETI, is a seasoned Brazilian musician known for his collaborations with bands such as Daydream Xi, Kingdom North, Third Eye, and Galaxya. After relocating to Brooklyn, New York, Masseti embarked on a solo journey, culminating in the formation of MASSETI and the release of his debut album, ‘Odds and Ends’. This project marks a new chapter in his career, showcasing his evolution as an artist. While still emerging, MASSETI has garnered attention within the progressive metal community for his intricate compositions and thematic depth. The album’s fusion of complex rhythms and emotive narratives positions Masseti as a promising voice in the genre.

Written during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, Odds and Ends’ reflects Masseti‘s introspective exploration of themes like mythology, dystopia, and personal transformation. The album represents a shift towards a more cinematic and emotionally charged progressive metal sound, blending technical prowess with storytelling. Anticipation for ‘Odds and Ends’ was fueled by the release of singles like “Against Our Fire” and “The Pool of Liquid Dreams,” which showcased Masseti‘s ability to craft immersive and thought-provoking music.

‘Odds and Ends’ is a progressive metal odyssey, weaving together polyrhythms, complex time signatures, and atmospheric textures. Influences from Opeth, Symphony X, Devin Townsend, and Dream Theater are evident, yet Masseti carves out a distinct sonic identity marked by cinematic ambition and emotional depth. The album delves into narratives of war, exile, technological escapism, and personal loss. Tracks like “Against Our Fire” depict a deposed leader’s vengeful return, while “The Pool of Liquid Dreams” explores a dystopian future dominated by synthetic experiences. Masseti‘s lyrics are rich in metaphor, inviting listeners into a world of introspection and transformation.

Masseti‘s vocal performance is characterized by a blend of clean, emotive delivery and dynamic range. His voice conveys vulnerability and intensity, effectively complementing the album’s thematic content. Masseti also showcases his multi-instrumental talents, handling guitars, keyboards, and vocals. Guest musicians, including Benhur Lima on bass and Eduardo Baldo on drums, contribute to the album’s rich sonic tapestry. The instrumentation is intricate yet cohesive, supporting the album’s narrative arc. The performances throughout the album are polished and precise. Each musician delivers with technical proficiency, enhancing the album’s complex arrangements without overshadowing its emotional core.

‘Odds and Ends’ is a compelling debut that balances technical complexity with emotional resonance. Its cohesive storytelling and immersive soundscapes make for a rewarding listening experience. While drawing from established progressive metal influences, Masseti infuses his work with a personal touch, particularly in the album’s thematic depth and cinematic elements. This blend of familiarity and innovation contributes to the album’s unique character.

Standout tracks include “Serpents and Whores” a powerful opener with theological and mythological undertones. “The Pool of Liquid Dreams” is a haunting exploration of virtual escapism. And “Gone” is a minimalist reflection on loss, featuring emotive guitar work.

The album provides engaging storytelling and plenty of thematic depth whilst showcasing exceptional musicianship and compositional skill. The album’s ambitious scope might benefit from more varied pacing in certain sections as some tracks may feel dense or overwhelming to listeners new to progressive metal. There is clearly a high-quality level of production that complements the album’s complexity. Co-produced by Masseti and Renato Osorio, the album boasts a clear and balanced mix. The production enhances the intricate arrangements, allowing each instrument to shine while maintaining overall cohesion.

‘Odds and Ends’ is a striking debut that showcases MASSETI‘s prowess in blending technical mastery with emotive storytelling. It’s an album that invites repeated listens, each time revealing new layers and nuances. Fans of progressive metal, particularly those who appreciate the works of Opeth, Symphony X, Devin Townsend, and Dream Theater, will find much to admire in ‘Odds and Ends’. Listeners seeking music that challenges and engages both intellectually and emotionally should not miss this release.
