Michael Murphy – Lighthouse : EP Review

Michael Murphy – Lighthouse : EP Review

10th February 2025 0 By Jess Mather

After 15 years of performing in and promoting bands, Michael Murphy has been working on a solo project, now, just short of a year later, he has finally completed and recorded his first EP. Lighthouse is a five-track acoustic blues-rock gem. This solo acoustic EP is a heartfelt and intimate collection of songs, driven by emotive storytelling and raw vocal delivery. The stripped-down production allows Michael‘s voice and lyrics to take center stage, creating a deeply personal listening experience.

The instrumentation is well-suited to the EP’s mood, focusing on organic sounds like acoustic guitar and minimal percussion. While the arrangements are simple, they maintain a warm and clear quality, making the songs feel authentic. The production is polished, with a well-balanced mix that highlights the emotional weight of the vocals. However, incorporating more creative instrumental elements or subtle dynamics could add variety without losing the EP’s intimate charm.

The songwriting is emotionally resonant, with strong themes of love, loss, and retrospection. The melodies are engaging, and the vocal delivery enhances the depth of the lyrics. While the storytelling is compelling, some lyrical choices lean on familiar phrasing. Experimenting with more unique imagery or unexpected word choices could make the narratives even more impactful.

‘Lighthouse’ feels thematically connected, though the current track order could’ve been refined to create a storytelling arc. Rearranging the songs might have created a more natural emotional progression, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in a journey. The consistency in tone is a strength, though introducing slight variations in tempo or instrumentation could add more dynamic contrast.

The vocal performance is a standout aspect of this EP. The delivery is powerful and filled with emotion, making every lyric feel deeply personal. The introspective and bluesy vocal style complements the raw instrumentation beautifully. Aside from a very minor moment of unclear enunciation, the vocals are expressive and engaging throughout.

Lighthouse has several memorable moments, particularly through its use of humming and whistling, which add to its emotional atmosphere. Its accessibility and relatability make it easy to return to, though introducing subtle layers or unexpected twists could further enhance its lasting impact. While the EP isn’t necessarily unconventional within its genre, it has strong potential and a more adventurous approach to arrangements and production could elevate it even further.

The title track “Lighthouse” has a slightly faster pace and vocal layering compared to the other songs, it’s lyrics create strong imagery and makes a fantastic end to the EP. I hope that Michael‘s next project brings some more of these types of elements.

Overall, this EP is a beautifully honest and emotionally driven piece of work. Its strongest elements lie in its heartfelt vocal delivery and cohesive atmosphere. With a few tweaks—such as refining the track order, taking more creative risks in instrumentation, and exploring more unique lyrical phrasing—this could become an even more compelling artistic statement. That said, its sincerity and rawness are what make it special, and those qualities shine through in every track.
