MOTHER’S CAKE LIVE IN LONDON 18.04.23 CAMDEN UNDERWORLD
12th April 2023Austrian psych/space-rock trio Mother’s Cake return to the UK next week to play a one-off date in London. Currently on a European tour, as they continue to promote their fifth album, ‘Cyberfunk!’ (2020), their schedule allows for a quick dash across the Channel to headline the Camden Underworld on 18th April.
“We’re back in the UK and can’t wait!” the band state. “Hopefully there will be fish ’n’ chips, lots of pints and a packed house to make it a night to remember. See you soon!”
It’s rare that an album can be as varied or vivacious as ‘Cyberfunk!’, which combines elements of The Beatles at their most psychedelic, Pink Floyd, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, even Arctic Monkeys and Wolfmother. A stunning and thrillingly infectious record, it is perhaps best described as psych-rock meets ‘Speedstoner’, full of passionate energy and intelligent design.
The production of ‘Cyberfunk!’ saw German producers Raphael Neikes and Manuel Renner join Yves Krismer (band vocalist) in playing key roles in its creation, from the psychedelic ‘Crystals In The Sky’, with its verses in half time, heavenly harmony choruses, devilish riffs and a horizon full of delay, to the intense ‘Toxic Brother’, the appropriately titled ‘The Beetle’, along with the deep swamp groove of ‘Love Your Smell’, the dramatic ode to ‘Gloria’, and the new wave funk rock of ‘Hit On Ur Girl’, which unwinds into a sweet folk song at its denouement. “The flow of the album has come about in the process of making it,” the band explain. “However, after some of the songs were finished, it was a very conscious decision as to what belonged where. Yves thinks very carefully about this and likes to create surprises from song to song, so some were deliberately written in a direction to fit the appropriate spot.”
Mother’s Cake has played hundreds of concerts since forming in late 2008, from Manchester to Mumbai to Melbourne, including shows with Wolfmother, Iggy & The Stooges, Omar Rodriguez-López, Alice In Chains and Limp Bizkit. They have released three successful studio albums that have charted in Austria and further afield, plus a ‘Live at Pompeii’-style live set recorded on the iconic ski jump in Bergisel, Austria. Notable media support outside of their home territory has come from the likes of LouderSound/Prog, Rolling Stone, and Red Bull.
