Psyclon Nine – And Then Oblivion Album Review

Psyclon Nine – And Then Oblivion Album Review

17th March 2025 0 By Laura Jane

Every so often whilst review albums and EP’s and the likes –  you’ll come across an album and go in blind and that’s exactly what I’m doing for this one. Today I’ll be taking a listen to ‘And Then Oblivion‘ by Psyclon Nine. Have I heard of these before absolutely not, will I review this album regardless, absolutely.

So firstly, let’s do some fact checks, who are Psyclon Nine? Formed in 2000 in San Francisco, California Psyclon Nine are an American band that blends industrial metal, aggrotech, and dark electronic music. It is clear from their extensive discography that they showcase their ability to push boundaries within the industrial and metal genres alongside adapting and not shying away from experimental changes in their sound.

The album from the get-go gives off a very dark and eerie vibe blending seamlessly electronic with industrial metal sound. I’d say the band from initial audio experience has a similar vibe to if you were to have Nine Inch Nails have a love child with Combichrist with the possible conception also being from Darko US with the vocal style being reflective of the deathcore style from Tom Barber. It’s a very interesting and unique blend and I like it. It’s different. However, before going any further into this review “would I go out of my way to listen to this again?” I’m already going to say “no” and not because of how it sounds or anything just that it generally wouldn’t be my go-to sound. It’s like a lemon, it’s tart and sweet but you wouldn’t shove the whole thing in your mouth… Okay, maybe after a few drinks you may but unfortunately, I’m not having a few drinks right now while reviewing this.

The production quality of the album is of high quality with the sound being crisp allowing each instrument to stand out while maintaining a perfect balance between them all, with smooth layers of reverb and ambient elements adding depth to the tracks throughout this album.

Highlight tracks from the album for me would have to be ‘I Choose Violence’, ‘Locust of Everything’ and ‘Say Your Prayers’. I would like to give a shout-out for the recently released song ‘Devils Work’ which I found to be a notable track from this album too.

Overall, I find the album interesting but to judge it overall I couldn’t score this album above a 6. I find the concept there, the production quality is on point and it’s been cleverly done with what seems to be some in-depth and thorough thought process but just in terms of an album as a whole I can’t find anything special about this that stands out for me. It’s a good listen and I’d recommend giving it a go as it definitely will have a target audience out there who will find this beyond enjoyable just for me unfortunately today I would score this album a 6/10. I would recommend this band to you if you were a fan of the following bands Combichrist, God Module, Suicide Commando, Dawn of Ashes, and Nine Inch Nails.
