REVEL IN FLESH are a death metal band hailing from Germany, “MANIFESTED DARKNESS” is the second release by these German death metallers. So what exactly do you get when you press play? Well REVEL IN FLESH revel in the old school of Swe-death metal and wear their influences on their sleeves, come on the name of the band is an ENTOMBED song from the ‘LEFT HAND PATH’ album.
So what is Swe-death (Swedish Death Metal), it is more mid-tempo death metal with a harsh bleakness running through the sound and the guitars have a buzz saw effect to them as they are heavily de-tuned and played through a distortion pedal. With the vocals still sung in the cacophonous guttural gravel-coated voice. So do REVEL IN FLESH draw much inspiration from the forefathers of Swe-death…yes they do and the tick all of the above!
“MANIFESTED DARKNESS” is a mean and aggressive album, the variety of tempo to the songs are a nice touch and they manage to capture some of the early Entombed groove and vibe on this release. The production is deep and keeps everything heavy and harsh, but not to much so it all muddles together and sounds like a wet fart coming through your speakers/headphones. REVEL IN FLESH write some good old fashioned heavy death metal, however there are numerous better death metal bands out there and don’t really stand out of the zombie horde.
REVEL IN FLESH have released an album that to some will be an instant classic, especially if they are new to Swe-death. However if you are already a fan of Swe-death then “MANIFESTED DARKNESS” might be a good addition to your collection depending on how much you love the genre or death metal. If you are new to death metal I wouldn’t start with REVEL IN FLESH, however if you are already a death metal fan then this might satisfy your death lust and I recommend you to check “MANIFESTED DARKNESS” out. Or you could just get out your CADAVER, GRAVE, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, UNLEASHED albums and play them instead?
