Set It Off, Point North, Call Me Amour and TSS – 02 Ritz Manchester; 20TH FEBRUARY 2025.
22nd February 2025The O2 Ritz is a venue I’ll always adore. I don’t know what it is about the venue but it seems to just have a certain charismatic charm about it which is always present when attending, may just be me but it’s just always a good atmosphere. The O2 Ritz is located in Manchester opposite Oxford Road train station so is easily accessible by all public transport which is always a bonus. For tonight’s line up we have TSS (The Sunday Sadness), Call Me Amour, Point North and headlining act Set It Off.
The lights dimmed and a roar of cheers went through the crowd for the first supporting act hailing from france, TSS (The Sunday Sadness).Out of all the bands on the line up today TSS are the only band that I’m not familiar with, I did listen to a few songs before tonight but I’ll be honest they didn’t really vibe well with me on my brief Spotify encounter however live my opinion did change on them. The band graced the stage with energy and enthusiastic bounce which ironically was the complete opposite of what you would have expected from their aesthetic, the aesthetic although giving a hard nod towards K-Pop-esque apparel mixed with a gothic grunge look. Musically, I’d have to say the band are a hybrid of genres inclusive of some what emo, metalcore and alternative rock with a sprinkle of some ‘rap’ and even as far to say a bit of synthwave. It was a very interesting and captivating show with all members having a unique stage presence. For me typically it’s not the sort of band that I would go out of my way to listen too but I was hooked and just couldn’t stop watching them. Throughout their set it was really fascinating that they included some French lyrics into their songs and although it seemed at these points the audience didn’t really know the lyrics or very little of the lyrics, did it fit really well with the style of music.
Next on the evening line up were Call Me Amour. Before tonight I did have a quick look at their set list and saw that they only had a short set list of 5 songs. Throughout their set they did play some new songs from their recent self-titled release ‘Call Me Amour’ such as ‘Bloom‘, ‘Happy Hell‘ and ‘Good Day‘ of which got the crowd cheering excessively. Highlights of their performance was the engagement between vocalist Harry Radford and the crowd. If he wasn’t in the crowd he was engaging with them from on the stage, it was beautiful to watch. I know you get a lot of engagement between bands and the audience and gigs but this engagement was on a complete other level and was admirable. I’ve seen a lot on social media from before and after this tour with Harry swinging around off building structures, unfortunately we didn’t get that sort of acrobatics tonight however we did get a spectacle of a performance which showed his showmanship and gracious stage presence.
Following on from Call Me Amour were Los Angeles band Point North. Point North are a three piece band who run without a bassist, it’s always interesting to see when bands don’t use a ‘traditional’ set up in their performances.
I absolutely adored their performance this evening with the guest appearance during their set of Cody Carson (Set It Off) during ‘Below The Belt‘ and the final song of ‘Safe And Sound’, I was very happy this was played especially as a finisher. With their energetic and dynamic sound ringing through the venue it’s safe to say their absolutely smashed their set on stage.
Finalizing the evening and headlining act Set It Off. From the first note played to the last note played this band remained intense. Opening up with one of their more popular songs ‘Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing [REBORN]’ the crowd were instantly hooked, line and sinker feeding out of Cody Carson’s hand. After the first three songs had played a fan in the audience threw up a nice bundle of roses to the stage of which Cody gracefully accepted and used as part of a prop during the song, that moment would have made one happy fan. Playing other fan favourites throughout their set such as ‘Fake Ass Friends’, Kill the Lights’, ‘Parasite’ and ‘Why Worry’ had the audience in unison singing along and was a sight to see, it felt like everyone in that moment at time knew all the lyrics and all were singing along at the top of their voices. It truly was a magnificent site to behold.
Overall the evening was a great show, it played host to some amazing bands and some highlights that will be remembered from this evening for a long while to come. It was for sure a night I was glad to have not missed.
