SLAUGHTERSUN – BLACK MARROW EP REVIEW
12th February 2025 0 By Laura JaneSlaughtersun are a band formed by Ben Karas, who is associate with the work invested into Thank You Scientist and Windfäärer and were formed in 2023 hailing from Lyndhurst, New Jersey. Slaughtersun provide top quality progressive death metal, that’s a sentence I never thought I’d see in written form from myself… TOP QUALITY PROGRESSIVE DEATH METAL.
The EP has a collective 6 tracks and run time of 23 minutes and 45 seconds giving it a fairly short listening time in terms of time taken to give this EP a thorough listening too. I have to say I enjoyed the EP for the majority however felt it lacks a lot of qualities that could leave my end rating any higher than what I have which is very unfortunate as I really really REALLY wanted to like this more than I did. It has potential but I just couldn’t get into it to be a full “Yes, 10/10 rating, let’s go!”. You may be saying, oh but at the start you said TOP QUALITY progressive death metal… Yes I did and I meant that however just this album as a whole I just felt a bit of cohesiveness and missing marks for me personally.
I did enjoy that sometimes the EP did move away from generic riffs and patterns you’d find in general death metal and brought a slightly more experimental / progressive input. It did make some of the tracks such as “Ready Cell Awaits” and “Relentless Thelemic“.
I would like to make one comment about “Relentless Thelemic” however that I just can’t shake and that was the ever internal feeling that the intro reminded me of the ‘Doom’ soundtrack song “BFG Division” of a lower quality standard. Reading that it makes me feel like that’s almost an insult, it’s not meant to be. It’s just the general vibe that was given, I am a massive lover of the Doom soundtrack as far as to say it’s possibly one of my favourite gaming soundtracks to date (honestly, I’m amazed I’ve not just reviewed that whole album in order to fan girl to be fair) and to have anything compared to it by a feeling is a massive compliment in my opinion.
You’re able to check out the the lyric video for the title track “Black Marrow” from their upcoming EP which was released January 10th, 2025 below:
Overall, the EP was a great listen but just didn’t quiet do it for me. I can give praise and admiration for the technicalities and the talent that is displayed throughout the album but just unfortunately can’t rate this above an 8 which don’t get me wrong is a solid rating but feel it just pipped the post. I’d definitely listen to the album again and would even add some tracks to my playlist just it wouldn’t be in the kind of “don’t walk, run” form of demand. A solid EP, great potential but gaining today from me a 8/10.
Score 8/10
