The Cult – Beyond Good & Evil (Start Your Ear Off Right 2025) – 2LP Review

20th January 2025 0 By Jon Deaux

After a 6 year hiatus, Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy reunited along with Mat Sorum to produce what is arguably one of the most underrated heavy albums by The Cult, Beyond Good And Evil.
Remastered and released on vinyl for the 1st time, with 1 LP on translucent red and the 2nd LP pressed in Coke bottle green and with an etched 4th side, this album sounds epic. The presing is excellent and showcases the dynamics of the original recording perfectly.

Lyrically there are philosophical musings, personal demons, and enough vague mysticism to make you feel like you’re about to embark on a journey of self-discovery, even though you’re actually just trying to find your keys. In typical Astbury style, some of the lyrics sound like they were written on a napkin after several shots of tequila but the attitude in which they’re delivered, that can be forgivven.
This may not be in the same league as Sonic Temple or Electric, but it’s certainly in a league of it’s own and is well worth owning. This is The Cult with power chords and more Heavy Metal than Goth
