The Haunted – Songs of Last Resort – Album Review

The Haunted – Songs of Last Resort – Album Review

23rd May 2025 0 By Damian Rounding

Yes, yes, yes! This is the first record from The Haunted since 2018, and I’ve been itching to hear it. Being a long-time fan and spending every Sunday glued to SWOLA on YouTube has only amplified that desire.

Right from the start, it’s fast, relentless, and gets my head nodding instantly. While the riffs might sound like typical thrash on the surface, there’s a darker, more emotive edge to them. Paired with the killer drumming, the album kicks off perfectly.

A few tracks in, and the energy and aggression are still full throttle. (Confession time: I was so caught up in headbanging and air guitar that I forgot to take notes until the third song!). Speaking of which, “Death To The Crown” delivers a serious punch towards the end. That breakdown almost had me attempting a spin kick in my living room.

There are moments throughout the album that strongly recall In Flames and Arch Enemy, which is a plus. “To Bleed Out” perfectly showcases that Scandinavian vibe you’d expect from a band with their roots.

Moving to the second half, “Through the Fire” explodes like a bat out of hell. The only moments of respite come during the breakdowns and the occasional intro. This album feels like it’s been brewing for a while, and I can honestly say it’s my favourite release from The Haunted so far.

In a scene flooded with new music, this is one you absolutely can’t afford to miss. It’s packed with riffs, solos, breakdowns, powerful drumming, and vocals full of emotion. What more could you want?

If you’re heading to Damnation Festival in November, make sure you catch these guys – they have no other gigs lined up for 2025 yet (though fingers crossed for a tour announcement!).
