Vola – Friend Of A Phantom – ALBUM REVIEW

Vola – Friend Of A Phantom – ALBUM REVIEW

10th November 2024 0 By Laura Jane

“Friend Of A Phantom” is a solid album release from this Danish- quartet, Vola. “Friend Of A Phantom” is Vola’s fourth album release to date since their self-released album Inmazes in 2015. The album is strong from start to finish showcasing the raw talent they bring to the progressive metal scene. Although their lineup has changed since their initial formation the music remains atmospheric and eclectic, remaining true to their djent-heavy roots (with a thrown-in dash of electronica for extra good measure).

The album kicks off with “Cannibal” featuring In Flames Swedish vocalist, Anders Fridén. The track is hard-hitting, aggressive and just what you’d expect from Vola’s past track record. In my personal opinion what a phenomenal start to an album, momentum does not slow down throughout – I have listened to this album 4 times now from start to finish before writing this review, and honestly – Have I wasted my time listening to it that much? Possibly… Do I regret this choice? No.. Definitely not.

Other notable tracks from the album are “Breaking My Lying Tongue”, “Hollow kid” and my personal favorite “Paper Wolf“. Trivia fact; The video for “Paper Wolf” was released on 22nd August 2023, almost a year before the album’s release.

Although a week late to the party, the album was released on the 1st November 2024 a staggering three years after their previous release of ‘Witness’. Overall, in conclusion, I’d highly recommend giving this album a go – you will not regret it. If you are a fan of the progressive, djent style this album is worth the full listen whilst it may not be as in-depth or as intricate as their previous releases it is a fucking amazing auditory experience.

One last thing I’d like to comment on is the artwork and detail of the album cover. The only word I can use to describe this is “stunning”. I don’t know what it is about it but it just makes my neurospicy brain very happy.
