THE WILDHEARTS – Never Outdrunk, Never Outsung – PHUQ Live- CD Review
20th May 2016Back in 1995 I discovered one of my favorite albums , PHUQ by The Wildheart, so when I heard that it was being issued LIVE to celebrate it’s 21st anniversary, I jumped at the chance to review this beauty.
Never Outdrunk, Never Outsung was a phrase coined by Wildhearts fan Tom Reed and the album is named in honour of The Wildhearts‘ audience who are ‘very loud and very thirsty!’
Recorded back in September of 2015 when The Wildhearts celebrated their 20th anniversary. This recording sounds chuffing huge.
The studio CD sounded good but there’s no comparison. This is the rawest & best PHUQ has sounded.
The audience is in fine fettle & have been mixed in really well as to not over power the bombastic sounding band.
The album opens with the war cry I Wanna Go Where The People Go & from there on PHUQ is played in its entirity, apart from the addition of ,Up Your Arse You Fucking Cunt, which is a lovely little ditty that didn’t appear on the studio version. This is due to the fact it didn’t exist then & only came into being as a little sing-along-song live.
Closing the album is Getting It which is always a fan favorite live. But this version is really special, not just because it’s recorded live but the crowds participation is phenomenal. It’s a proper ‘wish I was there moment’
Never Outdrunk, Never Outsung has captured the spirit of The Wildhearts perfectly.
I’ve been smiling like a Cheshire cat for the past hour listening to this. I’m hoping it was captured on film.
