C87 – VARIOUS ARTISTS – 3CD Album Review

Way back in the annuls of time New Musical Express (NME) released a mail order cassette entitled C86. To celebrate 30 years of that cassette Cherry Red have issued C87 & it’s a monster of a compilation. Boasting such as, The Wedding Present, Pop Will Eat Itself, Inspiral Carpets & The Primitives.

If NME had reconvened a year later to release C87 is the main inspiration behind this humongous CD set. All the tracks were recorder between 1986 & 1987. The CUD demo has never been issued before (that’s a nice find).

Discs 1 concentrates on more of the well-known acts such as, The Shamen, Wonderstuff, The Boy Hairdressers (who morphed into Inspiral Carpets).

Disc 2 & parts of disc 3 mainly revisit acts who graced the mighty C86, The Bodines, Miaow, Mighty Mighty & The Wolfhounds to name a few.

The remainder of Disc 3 feature more of the angular acts, The Siddleys, Jamie Wednesday & Emily to name a few.
There are so many highlight to C87 & it pays a fitting tribute to C86. Neil Taylor (the original C86 compiler) has contributed an amazing amount of liner notes which is in a substantial booklet which also features illustrations of original record covers, posters & photos.
