Holocaust: Heavy Metal Mania – The Complete Recordings Vol.1 – 1980-1984, 6CD Box Set Review

Holocaust will be on your radar courtesy of Metallica and their $5.98 EP (or Garage Days Revisited) with their cover of the classic Small Hours.

Holocaust is a beautiful slice of NWOBHM (although they’re from Edinburgh) and deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Iron Maiden, Raven and Venom and not the small, albeit an important, footnote that they’ve become.

Holocaust themselves are musically influenced by  Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motörhead, AC/DC, UFO, Led Zeppelin, Rush and Budgie, which is blatantly obvious when you hear the prog tinged proto-punk of such tracks as Long The Bell Will Toll, Jirmakenyerut and No Nonsense

This is an absolutely massive box boasting 6 discs of raw studio and live material.

All CDS are housed in cardboard sleeves that replicate the original album sleeves and all packaged in a sturdy clamshell box with a lovely booklet that’s full of rare photos and an essay.

The inclusion of a disc that features all their singles along with their respective B sides is just an added bonus along with the studio and live material.  The video audio CD of the Hot Curry & Wine LP is lovely especially as it contains the 1st ever outing of The Small Hours.

This boxset is an absolute bargain. Especially as their album The Nightcomers
commands £40 (correct at time of writing) for a decentr copy.

This is a must have in any metal fans CD collection.

Score 8/10
