IQ – Dominion – Album Review
27th March 2025IQ’s latest album Dominion (yes, that’s the band name, not an accidental typo in my search for Mensa applications). They’re a proper progressive rock band, meaning they make music that isn’t afraid of a ten-minute guitar solo. To be fair, Dominion is very much that—big, bold, and the kind of thing that demands you put your phone down and listen.
We start with “The Unknown Door,” which clocks in at 22 minutes. You get soaring instrumentals, intricate melodies, and enough mood changes to rival a teenager who’s just been asked to empty the dishwasher.
“One of Us,” a rare three-minute track, which for IQ is a haiku. It’s a nice breather before the album throws you back into the deep end with “No Dominion,” featuring a guitar solo that makes you question all your life choices—like, why did I quit piano lessons? Why did I cut my own fringe in lockdown? Life’s mysteries, much like the world of prog.
“Far From Here,” is a 12-minute emotional rollercoaster that starts delicate before absolutely going for it in a way that would make most standard pop songs cry in the corner.
The finale “Never Land,” is a slow-building track that reminds you why this band has been around for decades—they just know how to craft a song.
FiIf you like prog rock, you’ll probably love Dominion. If you don’t like prog rock, this album might convert you—either that or you’ll just marvel at the sheer audacity of a 22-minute opener.
Either way, it’s worth a listen.
Now, I need to go stare into the distance and pretend I understand odd time signatures.
