Well this is ‘JUNGLE ROT‘ 8th studio album if you include Skin The Living demo/CD as an album, which you will recall that I reviewed ‘Victory Records‘ remastered release. (go check out my review you fools).
‘JUNGLE ROT‘ are not original, lets just get this out of the way, however they have a sheer determination to just annihilate you with bombardment after bombardment of groove-laden death metal. They have once again proven that pure speed and blast beats galore are not the only formula for death metal. This will shatter you with its guttural (but quite clear) vocals, thundering panzer division heavy drumming and head exploding riffs. This album starts as it means to go on and “Voice Your Disgust” explodes from your speakers with its heavy drumming and incorporated thrash metal riffs speed along and the solo is Slayer-esque. The album then doesn’t let up until the assault is over, this is eleven tracks in 35 minutes of groove-driven death metal.
What makes JUNGLE ROT stand out from the death metal pack is their ability to craft skull crushing, catchy, infectious material that is as heavy as a Panzer Division. The breakdowns are more thrash than metalcore and counterbalance the destructive bombardment of riffs that dominate and assault the listener. They compliment each other extremely well and hopefully JUNGLE ROT will be seen as a death metal force to be reckoned with (always seem to think that they are always seen as a second tier band). JUNGLE ROT have started to do the groove-laden death metal better than SIX FEET UNDER have been doing recently (See Dave’s review of the new SIX FEET UNDER album to see if they have returned to The Haunted, Warpath, Maximum Violence style).
My only downside to this album (and JUNGLE ROT in general) is that there is some tracks that are more like fillers, which you cant really do on a 35 minute album. “Rage through the Wasteland” and “I Don’t Need Society” fall into this, although they are good songs they just aren’t as good as the rest of the album and stop the flow a little. This album is perfectly listenable, occasionally catchy and great and would be a nice addition to any death metal fan collection, but that might be JUNGLE ROT‘s problem…they are just to solid! Nothing ground breaking or never anything bad…they just plod along the battlefield destroying everything in their path. If you have never heard any JUNGLE ROT before then this is a great album to buy, if you are a JUNGE ROT fan already then you know what to expect…
SCORE – 6.75/10
