Slik: The Complete Slik Collection, 2CD Review

Slik: The Complete Slik Collection, 2CD Review

24th September 2024 0 By Jon Deaux

Slik, that shiny, polished outfit from Glasgow, has finally gifted The Complete Slik CollectionL. Fronted by the legendary, Midge Ure—yes, that Midge Ure before his fame with Ultravox (it’s odd to think he turned down being the Sex Pistols vocalist). Slik always carried a certain allure. Their sugar-coated hooks and lush harmonies could make even the hardest rocker smile with plenty of anthemic choruses that make them unforgettable.

Slik’s tenure was shorter than a flared trouser hem in a rainstorm. They came, sparkled like a disco ball at a school dance, and by 1977, they vanished faster than your dad’s sideburns in the ‘80s.

They may not have been in the same lane as Bowie or Bolan— as no one was smearing glitter on their faces and singing about space oddities—but they didn’t need to be. Slik captured the hearts of a generation with poppy, straight-faced earnestness that could melt the toughest critic’s heart (or at least their polyester vest).

Thanks to Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, the dynamic duo behind more pop hits than a broken radio station, the production is nothing short of spectacular. Imagine layers of shimmering guitars, tight rhythm sections, and vocal harmonies that fly higher than your Wi-Fi signal after a router reboot. These guys didn’t just make songs, they engineered pop masterpieces with the precision of someone building IKEA furniture—except, it worked.

This is a collection that is well worth grabbing by the sparly glitter balls.

Score 8/10
