Walter Trout will be heading back to the UK for a full headline tour in October following his outstanding performance at the Rockin’ The Blues show in London in June. The tour includes two shows for Planet Rock Radio’s ‘Rocktober’ run with Kris Barras Band, Dan Patlansky and Mollie Marriot. He starts in Exeter on 3rd October and calls through Southampton, Norwich (Rocktober), Brighton, Bristol, Birmingham, York, Edinburgh and finishing in Sheffield (Rocktober).
Walter Trout is the beating heart of the modern blues rock scene. Respected by the old guard. Revered by the young guns. Adored by the fans who shake his hand after the show each night, and after five decades in the game, Trout still remains a talismanic figure. The New Jersey maestro spent time in John Mayall’s Blues Breakers and Canned Heat before embarking on a prolific solo career and his most recent releases have seen him at his most creative and powerful yet, from ‘The Blues Came Callin’ (2014) and ‘Battle Scars’ (2015) to ‘We’re All In This Together’ (2017) and ‘Survivor Blues’ (2019). He’s one of a few artists with the vision, talent and star-studded address book to pull off a project on the scale of ‘We’re All In This Together’ which features; Edgar Winter, Randy Bachman, Jon Mayall, Joe Bonamassa, Charlie Musselwhite, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Warren Haynes and more.
His most recent release is ‘Survivor Blues’ which came out in January this year. He is no ordinary artist and this is no ordinary covers album. From the day he conceived the project to the moment he counted off the first song in the studio, Walter Trout had a bolder plan for ‘Survivor Blues’. “I’m riding in my car sometimes,” says the US blues titan. “I’ve got a blues station on – and here’s another band doing ‘Got My Mojo Workin’. And there’s a little voice in me that says, ‘Does the world need another version of that song?’ So I came up with an idea. I didn’t want to do ‘Stormy Monday’ or ‘Messin’ With The Kid’. I didn’t want to do the blues greatest hits. I wanted to do old, obscure songs that have hardly been covered. And that’s how Survivor Blues started…”
It takes a stellar lineup of musicians to reinterpret the greatest sunken treasures in the blues genre. The thunder and finesse of drummer Michael Leasure. The muscular groove of bassist Johnny Griparic. The spell-casting fingers of keyboards session god and regular Trout conspirator, Skip Edwards. It also features guest appearances from Sugaray Rayford and The Doors’ Robby Krieger.
This is the sound of an artist thriving, on an album that is sure to light another rocket under his blooming late career. Trout says, “I feel like I’m in the best years of my life right now. I feel better than I have in years physically. I have more energy. I have a whole different appreciation of being alive, of the world, of my family, of my career. I want life to be exciting and celebratory. I want to dig in. I want to grab life by the balls and not let go, y’know…?”
