Theatre Of Hate – Westworld:Deluxe Version

Written by John Deaux

Formed from the ashes of punk band The Pack, Theatre of Hate traipsed  through post-punk of the early 80s & now their seminal album Westworld is being re-issued as an outstanding 3 disc deluxe package.

Out of print for many years this version not only contains the original re-mastered album complete with remixes of the track Do You Believe In Westworld, Propaganda & a re-recording of the classic Original Sin. The other 2 discs contain peel sessions, alternative mixes & a complete live show from 1982.

The packaging is superb. All 3 discs have their own cardboard sleeve with artwork, the booklet has immense liner notes taken from interviews with band members, all in a lavish clamshell box & released just in time for Xmas.

The main album disc sounds immense & the bonus tracks are just mind-blowing. However its discs 2 & 3 that are well worth the purchase alone.

Disc 2 kicks off with the audio of their TOTP appearance performing their top 40 hit Do You Believe In Westworld, the majority of the 2nd disc is Peel Sessions. These are absolutely incredible, as live this band came into their own. The alternative mixes that end the disc are a great look into what went on behind the scenes & what was rejected in favor of the final album sound.

Disc 3 is the jewel in the crown. Previously unissued, this live concert from Vienna in 1982 is great sounding. Obviously this is from the original analog source so there’s a couple of sound dropouts due to the age of the recording. However it is  mastered & mixed properly. The band is on top form & saxophonist John ‘Boy’ Lennard has some set of lungs on him.  There’s been plenty of Theatre of Hate bootlegs floating around so it’s really great to finally get a decent sounding gig. One of the best sounding live gigs of this era despite the source material.

For fans of Bauhaus, Spear of Destiny, Fields of the Nephilim
