Cadaveria – Silence
29th November 2014Black metal is something I’ve started to get into recently. So when I was asked to review Silence, the fifth full length release by Italian black metal / gothic metal musician Cadaveria and her band, I jumped at the chance.
Opening track “Velo (The Other Side Of Hate)” grabbed my interest by the throat straight from the off, with a relentless and fast paced funeral dirge that has moments of thrashy riffs and others of haunting soundscapes. The first time I heard it I honestly wasn’t sure what to make of it. Was it black metal? And if not, what the hell was it? Whatever it was, I liked it a lot, so I kept listening.
And the more of the album I heard the more apparent it became that it’s actually impossible to classify the album under a specific genre. Yes, it’s black metal in some places, but it’s also gothic metal, symphonic black metal, and even death metal in others. As a result, this is an incredibly interesting and entertaining album – because Cadaveria perfectly combine all those different styles to create a unique sound of their own that I find really refreshing.
The band have created an amazing musical tapestry of extreme music with passages of haunting horror and others of near brutality, but it’s all done in a catchy as hell you-can’t-get-these-riffs-out-of-your-head way.
And throughout the album Cadaveria’s vocals are simply amazing – switching between a beautiful clean style and a rasping witch-like one so effortlessly that you find yourself doubting that it’s actually just one person.
If you’re a fan of black or gothic metal, or just fancy listening to an album where the band aren’t afraid to try something a little different, then I would highly recommend picking yourself up a copy of Silence. I will definitely be checking out Cadaveria’s back catalogue, and will be watching her future releases with real interest. Awesome stuff !!
