Anthrax – Glasgow O2 Academy – 30th September 2022

1st October 2022 0 By Jon Deaux

A stormy, dismal, powercut laden day in the Lothians wasn’t going to quench the feeling of travelling to Glasgow to see the mighty Anthrax celebrate their 40th (well, 41 to be correct at the time of writing) anniversary.

To kick proceedings off were Sworn Enemy from New York. A cross over thrash band who stupidly groove driven and well worth turning up early for.

Next were Municipal Waste. Another crossover thrash act, who I’ll be honest have never been on my radar UNTIL NOW. Holy shit. They were not  just relentless old school thrash but they were bloody fun to watch. They were clearly having the time of their lives watching the Glasgow crowd go bat shit crazy crowd surfing. I highly recommend checking them out live. I know I will again. They really were born to party.

Of course we’re all here for the legendary thrash metal titans that are ANTHRAX. A movie that was almost too long opened the show followed by  a 14 track set list that was damn near perfect. The biggest surprise of which was the inclusion of Only from the Sound Of White Noise album. Although originally sung by John Bush, Joey absolutely nailed it.  There were so many highlights but the biggest had to be the circle pit for Indians.

As soon as the cry of WARDANCE went up, atleast 95% of the floorstanding audience were caught up in the biggest moshpit I have ever had the joy of witnessing at a show. Thank fuck I was in the balcony. It was insane.

Anthrax finished the night of with Got The Time which led into Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.). Although the band were loud  the crowd (at times) were louder.

I left the O2 with my throat raw and my ears ringing. It is definitely in my top 5 shows of all time and definitely the gig of the year.

After a few lean years, Anthrax are certainly back on top and firing on all cylinders.

I’m knackered just thinking about how much bouncing around Scott Ian did.
