Mascot Label Group Mascot Label Group Launches The Funk Garage ImprintLaunches The Funk Garage Imprint3rd March 2020 0 By John Deaux
The Mascot Label Group is adding a funk label to its expanding umbrella. The new imprint, The Funk Garage, will exist alongside other Mascot labels such as Mascot Records, Provogue, Music Theories Recordings, Cool Green Recordings and The Players Club. Funk pioneer Bootsy Collins will play a leading role in finding and shepherding projects for the new company.
The imprint’s first signing is the legendary funk and soul jazz saxophonist Maceo Parker, known for his work with James Brown, Prince and Parliament-Funkadelic. Parker is releasing his next full-length album via Funk Garage / Mascot Label Group later this year.
“Funk music and especially funky guitars have been at the roots of my love for the instrument,” said Mascot CEO Ed Van Zijl. “The Funk Garage is a natural new kid in the family to me. To have the grandmaster of funk Bootsy Collins on our side is simply fantastic! Can’t wait to get started!!”
“We’re psyched to be collaborating with Bootsy, the legendary Funk icon on the launch of our new Funk-centric imprint, The Funk Garage!” said Mascot Label Group US President Ron Burman. “Expect some Funkalicious music very soon!”
Rising to prominence with James Brown in the early 1970s, and later with Parliament-Funkadelic, Collins’ driving bass guitar and humorous vocals established him as one of the leading names in funk. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted in 1997 with 15 other members of Parliament-Funkadelic. “I’m so Funked up about starting this adventure with Mascot as an A&R funk/garage man,” said Collins. “Ed and I share the same vision of bringing music to people with this partnership. This is only the beginning of a very personal & funked up P-Lationship to share with the World!”
