Mississippi MacDonald’s New Album ‘Do Right, Say Right’ is Out Today

19th November 2021 0 By Jon Deaux

Three-times British Blues Awards nominee, the London-based soul-bluesman Mississippi MacDonald today releases his album, ‘Do Right, Say Right’, on APM Records.

“Don’t misunderstand these blues,” says the UK bluesman, “This isn’t sad music: this is about joy and the celebration of who we are and the journey we are on. From hard times to succeeding despite the odds; from heartbreak to healing; from darkness into light. You’ll hear a little of Alberts King and Collins; some Memphis horns and Hammond organ; and I’ll tell you stories with my ’61 Strat. But most of all, I hope you’ll hear my lifelong passion and love for this music.

“What’s more, in a bit of blues magic” he says, with tongue in cheek, “if you play the record backwards, whatever blues YOU have will reverse and you’ll wake up one morning feeling fine. But it sounds better if you play the record forwards!”

Mississippi MacDonald is a 3-times British Blues Awards nominee. Despite his moniker, he hails from London, England. He’s been playing since he was 11 years old and has travelled far and wide on the US Blues trail, meeting the likes of Pinetop Perkins, Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith, Otis Clay and even the King of the Blues himself: B.B. King.

Mississippi has a mission to take classic blues and soul roots and ingredients and work them into fresh, modern material. Singles from ‘Do Right, Say Right’ — like ‘I was Wrong’ and ‘It Can’t Hurt Me’ — show just how damn good he is at doing that.

‘I was Wrong’ — the first single from the album —draws you in with a classic Blues hook, beguiling organ and sweet shiny horns, plus strong percussion, then brings in Mississippi’s impassioned, soulful vocals. There’s plenty of expressive lead guitar too. Classic Blues, brought up to date in fresh material — as per Mississippi MacDonald’s mission statement and creed.

“It’s modern; it’s not musical archaeology,” says the man of his music, “It’s authentic and celebrates a rich, fantastic tradition. It’s soul-blues, and you’ve got to put your best into it.”

‘It Can’t’ Hurt Me’ is a fresh song, again built on classic Blues blueprints and foundations, but given a modern spin, angle and message: an engaging hook and guitar solo, plus impassioned vocals and no-holds-barred lyrics about suspected infidelity and resilience.

As an album, ‘Do Right, Say Right’ keeps the calibre of the tracks high throughout.

If you’ve a thirst for classic Blues and soul with original talent, Mississippi MacDonald’s ‘Do Right, Say Right’ is just what the doctor ordered.
