Steve Vai – Inviolate Tour – O2 Academy, Glasgow – 4th June 2022

It’s been 6 years since Steve Vai was last in Scotland and almost 4 years since Steve had performed in front of an audience. 

Tracks taken from his new album Inviolate (reviewed HERE) are seamless in this current set list. 

He wastes no time in taking the stage at 8pm and launching straight into Avalancha from Inviolate transitioning to Giant Balls of Gold  (‘Alive In Ultra World) and then Little Pretty also from Inviolate. So far so good. But it get’s better. 

Tender Surrender from the EP Alien Love Secrets and Lights Are On from Modern Primitive.

Infact the only album Mr Vai and Co don’t touch on is Flexable. Of course his latest offering takes centre stage and it was an absolute joy to hear a couple of my favourite tracks (Candlepower and Sandman Cloud Mist). 

Liberty and For The Love Of God  from the genius Passion and Warfare album also make an appearance however the glaring omission was Tears Of The Hydra which is such a shame as I would’ve loved to seen and hear that guitar live as well as the track Knappsack (featuring just Steves left hand) but then we can’t have everything.

Drummer Jeremy Colson, 2nd guitar and keys maestro Dave Weiner and bass player extraordinaire Bryan Beller all got their own spotlighted solos. They further highlighted their pure unmitigated skills and why they play with Steve Vai.

There was no support act and just a brief 20 minute interval midway which made for an incredible way to spend a couple of hours with Mr. Vai. 

Steve is currently 62 years of age and has been touring for 40 of those (correct at time of writing), his playing is still effortless and every note seems to flow and fall out of his guitar with ease. 

Steve Vai is still one of the worlds most innovative guitar players and this night was incredibly special to witness. Hopefully it wont be another 6 years before he’s back in Scottyland.
