Swedish blackened-death metaller’s VAMPIRE return to terrify us with their third full length instalment REX.

This superb maniacal endeavour is immensely rewarding with the band continuing to deliver their cold and atmospheric brand of sonic gold. All praise to VAMPIRE in pulling me in to their ghoulish world with such immediacy that I feel this album will be indelibly imprinted on me forever.

There is so much to hear on REX and it is clear that they have no shame in allowing their influences to shine through in their own art. This album has such a strong sense of nostalgia and familiarity yet without feeling like it is trudging over old ground.

Thematically REX is drenched in 70s and 80s gothic cinema with dark characters set amongst ancient European history all riding a ferocious wave of thunderous and glorious metal.

Feverish guitar riffs, blistering leads, manic rhythms and banshee like wailings all come together in REX to make our world a much more beautiful place to be.

Score 8/10
