Call of the Void – Ageless

Call of the Void – Ageless

9th April 2015 0 By Suzie Rottencrotch

Denver, CO’s Call of the Void is a five-piece metallic hardcore outfit that effectively combines the ugliness of crust, the sharpness of metal, and the grooves of sludge reminiscent of Cursed, Trap Them, and Rise and Fall.

With their second album on Relapse entitled “Ageless,” COTV is noticeably more comfortable in its collective skin and seeks to shed (no pun intended) any and all naysayers with a crisp and focused attack. Each track on this LP showcases the stylistic diversity the band is known for. “Honor Among Thieves” brings the Burnt by the Sun-esque metallic grooves with some interesting guitar work and rippers like “R.I.S.” bring the grindcore and classic hardcore influences into the driver’s seat while other tracks like “The Hive” and “The Sun Chaser” demonstrate that the band can drag your carcass around for lengthier, more layered beatings.

Steve Vanica belts out scream after blood curdling scream on these tracks and although he isn’t the most diverse vocalist in the game he makes up for it with sheer fury and intensity that definitely helps mold the overall aesthetic and counters the clear and bold production that may alienate some the grind and hardcore orthodoxy. Gordon Koch is equally impressive on “Ageless” and his tight drum fills and precision, stop / start blasts and thrash beats truly guide the tracks and give them a lively sense of energy.

With “Ageless,” COTV have mastered their metallic hardcore fusion and are ready, willing, and able to tackle more ambitious efforts with future releases. The talent is certainly there and so is the malice.
