Back in the late 80’s / early 90’s I was really into funk rock / metal bands such as Living Colour, Fishbone, 24-7 Spyz, Mordred, and Infectious Grooves.

Unfortunately, the funk rock / metal movement died a death in the mid 90’s, and though a few of the bands are still going (I’ve seen Infectious Grooves and Living Colour live recently, for example) the scene is now almost none existent.

I’m therefore always incredibly interested when I hear about a new band who describe themselves using the term funk rock or funk metal – and was therefore delighted when Abhinandan Mukherjee, the drummer and manager of Indian ‘funk / alternative rock‘ band Gingerfeet sent me a copy of their debut album for review.

Gingerfeet have put together a stunning debut album of feel good funk rock – the 9 tracks on High and Above: The First Wave are catchy as hell and I’ve had the album on repeat play since I first got my hands on it.

It’s more funk rock than funk metal, with an overall mellow and chilled out vibe – though the album does have it’s heavier moments such as in ‘Stars‘, my personal favourite from the album.  Musically and lyrically Gingerfeet are all about positivity and, as a result, listening to this album is an uplifting experience – you really can’t help but smile as you tap your feet or jump around the room to the music.

From listening to High and Above: The First Wave it’s clear that the band are all very talented musicians, and it’s great that each band member has been given the chance to show what they are capable of.  Gingerfeet won the best band award at the Hard Rock Rising 2013 awards in Hyderabad and it’s not hard to see why.

Check out the official video for ‘The Vibe‘:

Gingerfeet are a band whose career I will be following with real interest – and if you’re looking for some good time grooves, High and Above: The First Wave is definitely worth checking out.  Stunning!
